Working Together to
Conserve our Forests
Our Mission
Southern Forests Conservation Coalition promotes the responsible conservation of our Southern forests and the ecosystem services they provide while opposing the industrial scale wood pellet industry and other unsustainable logging practices. We are accomplishing our mission through educating organizations, decision-makers, communities and individuals on the impacts of the wood pellet industry and empowering them to take action to protect the benefits standing forests provide to our communities.

Southern Forests Conservation Coalition is committed to standing with communities of color, including Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities. The negative impacts of industrial logging and the wood products industry disproportionately impact communities of color with pollution, increased risks of flooding, and a degraded landscape. Systemic racism has concentrated land ownership in white communities. Of the 90% of land in the US South in private ownership, less than 1% is owned by people of color. As a coalition and individuals, we believe that equity and justice are critical components of environmental protection. We stand in solidarity with people of color to condemn systemic racism in the US.
How We Accomplish Our Mission
Encourage research and compile information on the scope and impacts of the wood pellet industry, including environmental, health, and climate impacts.
Educate organizations, decision-makers, communities and individuals on the impacts of the industrial-scale wood pellet industry, empowering them to take action to protect the benefits standing forests provide to our communities.
Develop and propose solutions to halt the expansion of the wood pellet industry and increase forest protection.
Work to eliminate the detrimental environmental, health, and climate impacts of the industrial-scale wood pellet industry.
Work to remove tax incentives granted to the industrial-scale wood pellet industry and increase tax incentives for landowners to keep their forests standing.
Work to encourage all community representation and participation.
Cutting trees down to use as fuel in energy production–known as biomass energy or bioenergy–is one of the most counterproductive things we can do if our goal is clean air and a livable planet. Despite this reality, policymakers around the world have invested heavily in bioenergy. Nowhere is this more true than in the European Union, where bioenergy policies in the UK and other member states enable billions in subsidies each year to flow to the balance sheets of large utility companies, padding their profits and financing the conversion of old coal-fired power plants to burn wood.
